High voice, recorder & keyboard. The seven pieces are inspired by the poems of famous poets: 1. Proud Songsters - Thomas Hardy; 2. The Birds - Hilaire Belloc; 3. Leda and the Swan - W B Yeats; 4. Boys Then and Now - Thomas Hardy;  5. Snow - Edward Thomas; 6. The Owl - Tennyson;  7. The Swan - James Reeves. The recorder, as might be expected, often takes on the role of the bird.

Narrator, 1 A + 4 SATB. I have taken the latter part of Robert Browning's famous poem of The Pied Piper (starting with the mayor's refusal to pay the Piper) and provided fairly straightforward music to go with it. A performance (which takes about 5 minutes) is hence rather in the manner of a story told with incidental music on the radio. It makes an unusual, but successful item at recorder playing sessions, as apart from anything else people enjoy the unusual discipline of coordinating their playing to the telling of a story. The storytelling can conveniently be done by the conductor.

4 SATB & narrator. This 15 minute piece is a sequence of eight poems by Edward Thomas, in and around which is woven music for recorder quartet. The music is often quite slow, and the notes are not difficult, but the piece is nevertheless a challenge in terms of obtaining excellent tuning and a beautiful sound.

Choir & SATTBGb/BCb. This is quite a dramatic setting of an ancient story of love and murder, using the same forces as Calm Is The Morn Without A Sound. Again all vocal material is doubled within the recorder group. Also available for recorders only as MHE 11007a.
